Introductory Felling Course (Chainsaw Maintenance, Cross-Cutting and Basic Felling)

This is a 4 day ITA (Integrated Training & Assessment) course, resulting in a Lantra Awards certificate of training.

This course will provide you with the appropriate techniques and safety guidelines to ensure that you are confident when using a chainsaw and felling trees up to 200mm diameter and that you are aware of the current Health and Safety guidelines, making sure you stay protected.

City & Guilds / NPTC qualifications also available.

Our expert instructors can come to your site all over the UK, or we can provide training sites, PPE and equipment hire in various locations.

Who should attend?

If you intend to work in the forestry and/or arboricultural industries and if you only need to fell trees under 200mm in diameter then this course is for you. If you are going to be felling larger trees you need to look at one of the NPTC accredited felling courses.

Prerequisites:

Due to the nature of training, a minimum level of fitness is required for specific operations. Whilst we do not want to disadvantage any learner, it is an essential requirement.

Chainsaw Maintenance, Cross-cutting and Basic Felling Course Content

Duration: 4 days (novice) or 2 days (refresher)

Awarding bodies: Lantra Awards, City & Guilds / NPTC

 Course Content: 

  • Identify the risk assessment and emergency procedures on a worksite
  • Assess trees to be felled for hazards and associated risks
  • Prepare trees to be felled and identify escape routes
  • Fell trees which have a diameter up to 200mm/8” safely and accurately using appropriate techniques
  • Remove branches from felled trees in a safe and methodical manner
  • Select and use hand tools and maintain them in a safe condition
  • Take down hung-up trees using hand tools
  • State techniques which must not be used for the takedown of hung-up trees.
